Get Involved With The Big Picture
Human beings were granted the ability to reason abstractly and thus have been separated from the rest of the animal kingdom. The easiest way to get involved is to educate yourself. By staying up on current events and brushing up on our history lessons, we can forge more informed opinions. We become more capable of seeing issues from different vantage points as well as appreciating often uncontrollable circumstances presented by the past.
We must also be involved in our political system. If we form these opinions but abstain from voting or voicing ourselvs, these opinions are wasted because they are ineffective and held captive within ourselves. Our voice can be louder than voting however. Letter writing campaigns or even peaceful protests make our voices heard by members of our government and the general public. We must also consider the people who we have most influence over, our friends and family. By using the relationships that we have already established and talking with people that enjoy conversing with you, our message will be heard.
Having a voice means nothing if we do not take action supporting what we believe. By stepping out into our communities we will turn heads. Working for the betterment of humanity does not necessitate leaving the live you live and moving over seas, but can be done where you live. In almost all locations people are in need, and most often there are organizations and programs that are trying to help these people. Find out which organizations operate around your area and join forces with them, or start one yourself.
There is no universal formula that will tell you how to get involved and how you can be most effective. A sound strategy, however, is to look first at yourself. What are your gifts? What do you excel at? What are your passions? What do you enjoy? Almost everything can be used to help underprivileged communities. Whether its sports you love or books, all things can be used to serve humanity.
One more option for getting involved is to support large organizations already established such as The One Campaign, Compassion International , Data, UNICEF, or Amnisty International. Check out their websites and see what can be done. See what projects they are working on and how they can be supported. Though it pains me to say it, these organizations and others need money. Most of us know that we can spare some cash, which can be put to good use if donated.
As we start to take action, we must know what we stand for. The culture that we live in tells us many things, however culture is not always correct. We must remember to look critically at what we believe and decide for ourselves what should be assigned merit and what should be thrown into the recycle bin.
